Laser Tattoo Removal

Unwanted tattoos may be removed by using the Revlite laser. Many ink colours may be effectively treated with this laser.

The laser removes tattoo ink by using specific wavelengths of light energy that pass through the skin and are absorbed by the tattoo ink.  The absorption of the light energy by the tattoo causes the ink to break up into tiny particles, with which the body can then deal.  By switching among the wavelengths, different colours of ink are targeted.

A number of treatments by the  laser are required in order to effectively remove the tattoo.  The number of treatments required to remove a tattoo will vary depending on the type and amount of ink used.  Professional tattoos may take from 4 to 10 treatments and sometimes more to resolve, whereas amateur tattoos may require 4 to 5 treatments.  All treatments must be spaced at least six weeks apart.

Prior to treatment with the laser for tattoo removal, the doctor may inject local anaesthetic into the area to be treated to help reduce the sensation of discomfort.  The sensation is that of a very short sting (similar to the snap of a rubber band on the skin), the intensity varying with the sensitivity of the site. Some treatments may be done after application of a numbing cream or with the assistance of a chilled air blower.

In most cases, the treated area will be covered with dressing.  There may be scabbing of the skin which usually flakes off within two weeks. Some larger areas will occasionally be superficially bruised or blistered and quite tender following treatment.

Once the area is dry, and a dressing is no longer required, the skin can be cared for in the usual way with cleansers, moisturisers, sun screens and make-up, if required.
